About 25 hotels, restaurants and cafes in Heuvelland are situated in the individual optimizing rural areas. This means that they have to purify their produced wastewater individually. In order to meet the legislation by end 2015 they have to install an individual wastewater treatment system (IWTS).
Three hotel / restaurant / cafes are chosen for further research. First of all, the influence of discharging unpurified wastewater on the surrounded surface waters was examined. The results proved a decrease in water quality after the discharge point at every business.
The next step showed the difference in water use and water discharge between the three businesses. With all the collected data, simulations with the software WEST® were made.
With this software two IWTS types were modeled and tested for each business. The first type is an activated sludge reactor performed as a sequencing batch reactor, the second type tested is a submerged aerobic filter. The results of these simulation showed that purification with an IWTS is possible if the capacity is big enough and an adequate buffer volume is required.
Further steps after this paper can be made. This paper can be used as basis for installing pilot plants at the investigated businesses. Also the use of plant systems instead of the compact systems in this paper can be investigated.
