Model-based evaluation of wastewater treatment ponds in Ho CHi Minh City (Vietnam)

An evaluation of the operation of the wastewater treatment pond system (WWTP) in Binh Tan district, HCMC, Vietnam was conducted using collected data and available mathematical models. The WWTP has total area of 35.4 hectares and design capacity of 46,000m3/d (2010), serving industrial wastewater and domestic wastewater from 160,000 inhabitants (2010) in the area. The investigated WWTP is an integrated system including 2 aerated lagoons operating in series and followed by 2 parallel 3-modular waste stabilization ponds (WSP). The data were collected and evaluated based upon Vietnamese standard TCVN 5945:2005 (Discharge standards for industrial wastewater allowed to be discharged into the water bodies other than those water bodies using for sources of domestic water supply) for following parameters COD, BOD5, SS, and NH3-N; and mathematical models of completely mixed flow and plug flow for BOD5 and NH3-N removal proposed by Middlebrooks et al. (1982); Pano and Middlebrooks (1982); Mara (2003); Shilton (2005); Crites et al. (2006) and Middlebrook and Pano (1983), respectively. It results in conclusions that after 2 years of operation (2006 - 2008), apart from NH3-N, all other parameters of the effluent satisfy TCVN 5945:2005 although there are elevations of concentration in two last maturation ponds. For NH3-N, although the observed concentration was out of standard in July 2008, the yearly average final concentration still satisfies the Vietnamese standard. The mathematical models show that the removal efficiency of the pond system does not fulfill the designed capacity. Some recommendations for improving the WWTP are also being discussed.
