Nitrogen balance of WWTP's shows that a significant internal nitrogen load is recycled in reject water from sludge digestion to the main wastewater treatment. The Babe process (Bio-Augmentation Batch Enhanced) was developed to treat reject water separately and to simultaneously increase the overall nitrification capacity of highly loaded activated sludge systems. To achieve this, reject water and a limited amount of return activated sludge from the main process are recirculated over a sequenced batch Babe reactor.
