Physical-chemical pre-treatment is meant to separate suspended and colloidal particles in the first step of wastewater treatment. By removing the particles a large part of the pollutants can be removed in a relatively compact reactor design. In general a number of pre-treatment unit operations can be applied for physical-chemical pre-treatment.

Recent research has shown that pre-precipitation in combination with the use of organic poly electrolytes as flocculating agents can be efficiently used for pre-treatment of raw wastewater
