SCWO Process
Increasingly stringent regulatory standards have limited sludge disposal to agriculture or landfill. Consequently, technologies, which reduce sludge volume have become increasingly favoured. Wet air oxidation like the Zimpro process has been commercially applied for sludge treatment, but the major disadvantage of this method was the incomplete destruction of organic matter, resulting in high concentrations of volatile fatty acids in the effluent. This was due to the process operating in the sub-critical region. Supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) does not suffer from this disadvantage
