The overall aim of this study is to develop a systematic ecological assessment tool for the 'Abras de Mantequilla' wetland in Ecuador using biotic indices based on macroinvertebrate communities. The objective is to use thsi assessment in the future for other wetlands in tropical areas.
In practical terms this means that water and macroinvertebrate samples from 16 stations in the Abras de Mantequilla wetland were taken with a handnet for three minutes during the wet season. Several physical-chemical parameters were analyzed from all the stations. Diversity indices, biotic indices and other bioassessment metrics were calculated for each station.
