Krepro Kemwater Recycling Process
Nowadays recycling and sustainable use of phosphorus is strongly discussed in Sweden. Recovery of phosphorus from sludge is expected to become law in the near future.

However, use of sludge in agriculture, which could be regarded as phosphorus recycling, is not realistic in the short term. The KREPRO process, developed by the Kemira Kemwater AB, aims at recovering four products from digested sludge, a phosphorus fraction, biofuel, precipitation chemicals, and a carbon source. Hygienisation and stabilisation of sludge are aimed at as well.

A pilot plant has been operated in the Swedish town of Helsingborg since 1997. In November 1999 MalmöWater decided to commission a full-scale sludge treatment plant integrating the KREPRO process with other waste disposal facilities by 2002. The environmental permit for constructing the full-scale plant is expected to be issued in the second half of 2002.
