Effluent concentrations for nitrogen of lower than 10 mg/l can be achieved with conventional activated sludge processes. However, the space necessary to realise such low-loaded processes might be often not available. The Biolift reactor is inserted between an existing activated sludge system (now used as an anoxic zone) and the existing secondary clarifier, with the addition of a recirculation loop between the biolift outlet and the anoxic zone for denitrification of the recirculated mixed liquor.
