Compliance with current effluent standards for nitrogen can be achieved with conventional activated sludge processes. However the area requiremnets of these low-loaded processes might be often not available. Compactsystems have been developed to remove nitrogen with more limited space requirements. The Biopur process can be seen as exemplary amongst a number of possible process designs combining the advantages of biofilm processes and filtration.
In March 2000 the German ATV issued a work report on biofilters [4], giving an overview over current developments. The report does not include supplier specific information, however, it gives a comprehensive treatment of design guidelines and cost indications, based on an extensive literature review and expert opinions. The work report is called 'Biofilter zur Abwasserreiningung'. Reference is made to Worksheet ATV-A 203 'Abwasserfiltration durch Raumfilter nach biologischer Behandlung' and the work report 'Abwasserfiltration' for further details on planning and construction of biofilters.
