Compliance with current effluent standards for nitrogen can be achieved with conventional activated sludge processes. However the area requiremnets of these low-loaded processes might be often not available. Compactsystems have been developed to remove nitrogen with more limited space requirements. The Biopur process can be seen as exemplary amongst a number of possible process designs combining the advantages of biofilm processes and filtration.

In March 2000 the German ATV issued a work report on biofilters [4], giving an overview over current developments. The report does not include supplier specific information, however, it gives a comprehensive treatment of design guidelines and cost indications, based on an extensive literature review and expert opinions. The work report is called 'Biofilter zur Abwasserreiningung'.
