A hybrid treatment process, called external nitrification process, was developed by the University of Cape Town to upgrade existing biological filter plants to achieve biological nutrient removal.

On most of the Dutch wastewater treatment plants the activated sludge process is used for biological treatment. In installing biological filters on existing WWTP the hybrid process design can be used in the Netherlands.
